Are You Guilty of Overload?

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Are you one of those goal oriented people that have too much on your plate? Is your to do list a mile long? Mine too.

The worst thing I ever did was buying a building for my business that needed a lot of remodel and restoration. At the same time my studio became an S Corp which is a lot of paperwork and expense. I also changed to a new accounting program so I was dealing with that learning curve. I created a non-profit group that requires tons of paperwork and confusion. To top it all off my spunky young intern was encouraging me to switch to digital. Some of those things needed to get done as part of a major purchase like a building but some of it could have waited.

But on a daily basis I am starting to notice things I do that should be eliminated, streamlined, or put on a “Stop Doing” list.

One thing I am tackling is email. I am finally creating rules so that some of the things I have subscribed to, but don’t need to filter through everyday, can be in their own folders.

Consider creating your own “Stop Doing” list and see if you really miss those activities. You might be surprised that you don’t.

Power of a Deadline

Posted by: | Comments (0)

This week I am working on my list of informational materials I need to produce while struggling with Spring Fever. A sunny day in between is good, the longer days are even better! I have quite a list of subjects and prioritizing is hard.

One question I get a lot at seminars I teach is “How do you pose an overweight person?” I now have a volunteer to model this so I can produce a DVD! I have a new appreciation for others who write books, make TV shows, and produce DVDs. The process is a lengthy one for sure. It is easy to get great ideas, it is another thing to keep a project moving.

If you find yourself in a similar position, give yourself deadlines. Better yet, publicize the deadline! I did that with my “Photographer’s Complete Guide to Framing”. I announced it would be done in, what, November? Well it is still at the proofers. But, I did get the bulk of my part done by November, more than I would have if I had not announced a date that is for sure. And since I want it to be as complete and helpful as possible, it is worth the work and wait.

Find the power in deadlines for yourself and you will see progress.

Deadlines and Going LIVE

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Here is a great example of how imposing a deadline on yourself makes a big difference in your progress whether it is a personal project or a business one.

As part of Barb Gordon Photo Coach, I am offering membership in the first two tiers of the Protégé Club. (You can click here to learn more about the memberships.) Included in both membership tiers is a monthly Teleclass and online digital audio recording of the call. This is a new and not so comfortable step for me- going LIVE and recording it. Not only because I have not done this before, it was also seemed daunting  picking the first topic, learning how to call in and record it, having the right notes in front of me, trying to adlib enough so I didn’t just read my notes, all of the other stuff related with going LIVE.

I had to force myself to pick a deadline. In this case, a date that the class would start. Even though I felt unprepared and under trained, I had to remind myself of one of my mottos: “Progress Not Perfection” and just make it happen. As the date drew near the event came together and it went fine!

The point is, had I not had a deadline, I would have pushed this to the backburner more than once because it was just enough out of my comfort zone. Now that I have one done, my checklists are created, my confidence is better, and I am ready to add a guest to next month’s call! The date is April 19, 2010, go get signed up!
